The loner: why the E46 Compact's headlights fit nothing else and never crossed the Atlantic

The E46 Compact had its own headlights, shared with no other E46, unchanged in production and never sold in the US. Two families: halogen and bi-xenon.

The E46 Compact is the odd one out of the E46 family. BMW gave the three-door hatch its own nose, and with it its own headlights. If you own one, almost everything written about "E46 headlights" is about the Sedan, Touring, Coupé or Convertible and does not apply to your car. This short explainer covers what does.

The short version

  • The Compact's headlights are its own design: none of its catalogue numbers appears on any other E46 body, and none of the Sedan, Touring, Coupé, Convertible or M3 numbers appears on the Compact. 1
  • Exactly two families exist: halogen and bi-xenon. There is no plain single-xenon Compact headlight in the catalogue. 1
  • Each family comes in a left-hand-drive and a right-hand-drive version. 1
  • The catalogue shows no running change in the Compact's headlights from the first cars in 2000 to the last in 2004. The Compact never received the Sedan's September 2001 facelift front. 1
  • The Compact is listed in the catalogue for Europe only, including right-hand-drive UK cars, and was never sold in North America. 2,3
  • The Compact never had adaptive (cornering) headlights; those exist only on the facelift Coupé and Convertible. 4

A car on its own

BMW built the E46 Compact from 2000 to the end of 2004; BMW's own classic-model page gives the 325ti's production as April 2000 to December 2004. 3 The catalogue lists nine engine variants: 316ti (four engine generations), 318ti (two), 325ti, and the 318td and 320td diesels. 1

The parts catalogue sorts the E46 by region per body. The Sedan is listed for Europe, the USA and ten other regions; the Coupé, Convertible and Touring for Europe and the USA; the Compact for Europe only. A request for a US Compact tree returns nothing. 2 An encyclopaedia entry agrees: the E46 Compact was not sold in North America, because its E36 predecessor had not sold well there. 3 BMW's own pages on the car give production dates but say nothing about markets, so they neither confirm nor contradict. 3

For a parts buyer the consequence is simple: there is no "US version" of a Compact headlight to worry about, and anything described as a US-spec E46 headlight is for another body.

Two families, nothing in between

On both catalogue mirrors every Compact variant lists the same two families, a halogen left and right and a bi-xenon left and right; the right-hand-drive versions appear only on the variants that were built in right-hand drive. 1

What is not there matters as much. The Sedan and Touring were sold with a plain single-xenon low beam before bi-xenon arrived with the 2001 facelift. 3 The Compact's catalogue page has no single-xenon unit at any date: it is halogen or bi-xenon. 1 If someone offers you a "xenon Compact headlight", it is either the bi-xenon unit or not a Compact part.

The option that goes with them is BMW's Xenon Light, code 522, which the Compact's headlight page references; the catalogue also lists a xenon installation kit for the Compact. 1 Two cautions here. First, a catalogue listing means the part is applicable to the car, not that the car was built with it: the bi-xenon unit is listed for the 316ti and the 318td as well as the 325ti, which tells you it could be ordered or fitted, not how many were. 1 Second, no BMW text we have says in words that halogen was the Compact's standard fit; it follows from xenon being the optional code, and that inference is MEDIUM, not HIGH. 3

Left-hand drive, right-hand drive

Both families exist in a left-hand-drive and a right-hand-drive version, and the right-hand-drive units are listed only for the engine variants that were actually built in right-hand drive. 1 A UK Compact needs the right-hand-drive unit; a German one needs the left-hand-drive unit. The beam pattern differs.

No facelift, no changeover

Owners of a Sedan or Touring have to know whether their car was built before or after September 2001, and Coupé and Convertible owners before or after March 2003, because the headlights changed with the facelift. (We cover those changeovers in a separate article.) The Compact owner has no such date to remember.

On the mirror that shows production-month views, the 325ti's headlight list is identical in September 2000, June 2001, March 2003 and December 2004, for left- and right-hand drive. Neither mirror prints a from/to date on any Compact headlight row. 1 The only "facelift" item in the Compact's lighting group is a conversion kit for the 2003 rear lights; the front was left alone. 1

One loose end: the second mirror lists an additional pair of halogen and bi-xenon numbers for the Compact that the first mirror does not show at all. One of them is not orderable. They are most likely later re-issued numbers for the same units, but neither mirror prints a supersession, so the relationship is not established. 1

Who made them

The Sedan and Touring headlight rows in the catalogue carry supplier notes (Bosch, ZKW, AL). No Compact headlight row carries any supplier note on either mirror. The Compact's xenon electronics (control unit, ignition element) are marked "AL", and a xenon bulb is noted "not suitable for ZKW", which suggests but does not establish that the bi-xenon units are Automotive Lighting parts. The halogen supplier is not established. 1

Why that matters: aftermarket and used listings often say "Hella" or "ZKW" as if it were a fitment fact. For the Compact, the catalogue does not say, so neither do we.

How to tell what your Compact has

  1. Check the build data. The xenon option is code 522, "Xenon Light". If option 522 is in your car's build data, it was built with bi-xenon. 1
  2. Owners' cues, with a health warning. Forum posts say factory xenon cars have no manual headlight-height dial on the dashboard, because the beam levels itself, and that xenon light is whiter and bluer than the warmer halogen. These cues come from Sedan and Touring threads, not Compact ones, and are LOW. We do not recommend judging by whether a lens is visible inside the headlight; owners report that on other E46 bodies that cue fails. 5
  3. Left- or right-hand drive follows from your market.

Notes on the evidence

Recorded conflicts. (1) One mirror lists an extra pair of halogen and bi-xenon numbers for the Compact that the other does not; relationship not established. (2) No supplier note on any Compact headlight row, where the other bodies' rows carry them; the maker of the Compact units is not established.

Not established (open). Maker of the halogen and bi-xenon units; relationship of the extra catalogue numbers; any in-production change not visible in the catalogue; whether any market outside Europe other than right-hand-drive markets received the Compact (the catalogue says "Europe"; the encyclopaedia says "not North America"; the gap between those two statements is not closed).
